PSA: AMD AM5 issue with over voltage requiring BIOS update

Chance for Gigabyte to get back to winning ways here with ASUS fumble. ASUS have been the go to for me now for years after Gigabyte falling in the quality department. It's a shame seeing them drop to such lows but hopefully it encourages the other alternatives to be more competitive
And I think it's showing already, AM5 Gigabyte boards do seem far better than even the X570/B550 lineup before it, the heatsink config is generally totally over the top which is only a good thing. But I want to know if they've sorted out their beep code fiasco.

Yeah the one Gigabyte board we have here in the office is constantly giving off weird beep codes. CMOS battery is the error it gives but it's been changed 3 times now in 2 years and still does it occasionally.

No rhyme or reason to it, you'll not hear it for weeks then suddenly 4 days in a row CMOS error code. Seems to be performing just fine though so it's at the point of ignore it but it's frustrating, especially as it's right behind me and I hear it every time it beeps.

Is that an AM5 though?

Asus seem to be intent on digging that hole deeper and deeper!

Product wise I have no issue with ASUS...sure there are issues but it's entirely possible AMD are just as much to blame.
As per the videos, it's not an AMD issue, AMD don't control the SOC voltages in any way, it's all set by the board partners.

Even when Asus stated they were limiting voltage to 1.35, they were actually pushing over 1.4V, plus their over voltage protection "OVP" which is a basic necessity on a board is obviously not working at all.

It's definitely an Asus issue

That would explain the lack of issues with Gigabyte boards then!

I finally got permission from PCS to update my BIOS (had to chase them after 9 days of silence) which I will do later...probably still going to keep EXPO off though as not sure I trust them enough now to have resolved it properly. Luckily, EXPO off isn't affecting me in anything I am doing so it's not a major issue...just annoying
I wouldn't be surprised if there's an ensuing court case against Asus if they don't drastically change their ways, what they're doing is flat out illegal

I don't think AMD are clean in this to be honest. The issue wasn't limited to ASUS boards, every manufacturer has had to issue a BIOS update (or several) while scrambling to try and resolve the potential failure. The problem is that Asus are doing it underhandedly, where other manufacturers are being far more open and relaxed about the status of their controlling software and BIOS updates. Asus are the only one to say that if you install the BETA bios to FIX the problem, your warranty is void.

The root cause of the manufacturers getting it wrong is that the spec supplied from AMD was incorrect, the AGESA builds had the wrong spec suggested as well.... but this isn't categorically known due to NDAs being in place, it's just what is being said. The spec definitely came from AMD though with regards to the recommended SoC limit.

AMD need to get a firm useful AGESA build out to the manufacturers with clear guidelines so that we can start to receive solid BIOS updates.

The ASUS debacle is a whole other story though. What they're doing to try and cover their butts is going to see them fall off of a very steep cliff. Between that and the board, potentially deliberately *cough*, under-reporting voltages.... it's a complete mess and a PR disaster for them. I actually considered returning my ProArt board as I just don't want a company like that having my money.

So im confused, forgive me as im not the most knowledge but
Is the non beta bios update out now? Or is it worth waiting?
Only recived my pc a couple days ago and would rather have it sorted asap.

Will contact PcSpecialist to ensure im allowed too of course
Thanks

Totally depends what board you have as to what BIOS is available.

So I got my system. Had the latest (non BETA) BIOS. Was going along fine until I got a crazy grey screen and weird noises from my speaker.

Did a restart but just kept going to a black screen. Had a look in window if the case and had a yellow light on the MB with "DRAM" written beside it :(

E-Mailed support anyway, I'm sure it will get sorted. It was amazing for the few hours I managed to use it though. Don't think it's anything to do with the issues on this thread but I was instantly thinking it was!

It's likely instability with the memory speeds, try as a test going into BIOS and reducing the XMP or EXPO speeds down to 5200MHz which is the native speed of the board (without memory overclock).

This is just temporary until they issue a proper fix from AMD at the AGESA level, but you'll be able to use it as normal although will lose a bit of FPS in games

Oh i see, thanks for the reply
Iv a Asus TUF X670E plus wifi
Just checked the support page
Appears its still a beta update from the 4th of this month
Yeah, still on the 1601 Beta.

You could flash 1409 which is non beta and has the SOC voltage limiter if you want an immediate bit of protection

It shouldn't be long before Asus have a proper update, they're being severely hassled globally.

I actually think it's working now, doing a fresh install of Win 11 but gone through a couple of restarts so far with zero issues.

Thank you very much, guess I'll be non EXPO until ASUS sort this stuff out!

It's a pain, but it can't be too much longer for them to sort it, fingers crossed.

Major pain.

Hey, I had consigned myself to sending it back at this stage so I'm taking the small victory (with thanks to you!).

And yes, way too much pressure on ASUS to keep ducking this.

So had another crash (screen went green and system rebooted) but it did go back to desktop with no DRAM errors although obviously still the root cause here.

Annoying but hopefully they sort this out quickly as trying to use a system that may just reboot at any time is not great.

Update: Tried some other games too and just can't seem to handle it past a few mins, constant system freezes, even with EXPO off.

And system going through the same weird stuff on desktop now. Weird artifacts on screen when I log in. Can't interact with anything and just reboots. Think there may be something more serious here than some EXPO settings as much as that helped for a little while.
