What are you driving at the moment?

The front profile.

I might get a big chrome bull-bar after the incident with the security fence.

The hardest lesson that came out of becoming a father for me was my partner forcefully illustrating the fact that any vehicle I owned from now on must be able to accommodate a baby seat and all the associated baby stuff.
And there will be loads of that.........

I think most people have started out at the budget end...and some people make it a hobby.

My history starts in 1994 and goes:
  • 1986 Austin Metro (for about a year)
  • 1988 VW Polo GT (for about a year)
  • 1991 VW Polo GT40 (for about a year)
  • 1994 VW Corrado VR6 (for about 5 years)
  • 1992 BMW 3.6 M5 (for about 2 years)
  • 1994 BMW 3.8 M5 (for about 8 years)
  • 2006 BMW Z4MC (bought 2008, current weekend/fun/track car on 160,000 miles)
  • 2003 Alfa 147JTD (for about a year)
  • 2006 Alfa 147JTDm (for about a year)
  • 2004 BMW 330D Touring (for about a year)
  • 2015 BMW 320D Touring (bought 2021, current daily driver)
I definitely started out budget and had some horrible cars, some of them on the company
1970s Mini Clubman
Ford Escort 1.4
Ford Escort 1.6
Vauxhall Astra 1.4 - I hated this one
Various company pool cars, the best of which was a Vauxhall Vectra SRI
Citroen Xantia petrol
Citroen Xantia diesel - lasted 10 years and 160k miles
2x Nissan X Trail 2.0D - loved these
Nissan X Trail 1.6D - gutless and put me off X Trails
BMW 530d SE Xdrive Touring - great car
BMW 530d MSport Xdrive touring - incoming later in the year

Full EV is not practical in my opinion. I considered hybrid, but the purchase costs were much higher. Maybe next time around for EV, when the ranges are better and recharging times are much shorter. It would take me several days to get from northern Scotland to the south coast of England or Wales in an EV and I wouldn’t fancy having one on the west coast of Scotland (a frequent destination).

Not sure how good Charge Place Scotland is in Highlands, they seem to have most points in the central band but their prices are good. £20 a year and nearly all points free after that.

I can get from Gloucestershire to the border on a charge so works ok for me as can have a half hour rest which will get me enough to get to Larbert, where I will be staying.

Get a full charge there then top up at last point in Scotland on way back. Normally that is a regular trip so saves me a load compared to petrol journeys.

Price of EVs still high but not much different to the SAABs I used to drive.

The new ID 3 should do about 310 miles on a charge and think it likely 500 mile batteries are not far away.

Biggest problem my mates have is home charging. My house was built just after the war with big gardens, so putting a driveway in was no hassle. A lot of people only have street or shared parking and fitting home charge points is impossible.

The lack of infrastructure is the main problem with total EV, and is the reason that I've decided to go with a self charging hybrid in the form of a Toyota C-HR which is arriving on Wednesday

It is over 600 miles to the south coast for me. Even if I eked out 300 miles range by driving slowly, I wouldn’t be able to make the journey without an overnight stop. A fast charge can only be done once in a day and gives less range and I would be looking for a recharge well before I got to the expected range. For me, the border is not far from being the mid-point of the journey. Undoubtedly there will be longer range batteries and faster charging eventually. We will then find out about all the environmental damage caused by wind farms, pylons through the Highlands and extracting lithium and cobalt (plus disposing of exhausted batteries).

Excellent @Martinr36 - why are you online then and not out having a drive :D no matter what time it is.

I'm sadly thinking of cancelling my Audi eTron order at the moment as time is moving on and still no sign of a build date - it keeps getting delayed and delayed so Im going to have to consider going for something that is in stock somewhere as my current car has to go back very soon.
